Institute of Architecture and Technology, Faculty of Architecture and Design, NTNU, has a vacancy for an Associate Professor at the interface of architecture and art. We are looking for an Architect or an Artist with innovative professional experience from working at the interface between architecture and artistic practice.

The position will be part of the teaching and research group Form with particular responsibility for developing and coordinating externally funded interdisciplinary research and collaborative projects in the specified field.

Faculty of Architecture and Design intends to expand the faculty’s externally funded research. The subject area of the art architecture interface is considered to have important potential for this in relation to the growing understanding that innovation requires radical perspectives and experimental interdisciplinarity. The position is permanent. Our expectation is that the position will be financially self-sustaining within three years. The appointee will contribute to the Form group’s teaching and to the practice-based PhD research programme in architecture and art together with the colleagues.

The appointee will be expected to participate in teaching and research development in the field of the call, through a combination of their own practice and in participation with both education and existing research. Particular emphasis is placed on the development of externally funded inter-disciplinary actions that foster collaboration and bridge cutting edge science, architecture, and art in the pursuit of innovative and creative solutions to complex and unpredictable societal problems.

The appointee will also be expected to be able to contribute to practical aesthetic discourse and innovative practice as well as supporting the departments ongoing research and development in the field of artistic aesthetic practice in relation to architecture, innovative perspectives, and transformative learning.

You will report to Head of Department.

Responsibilities

Contribute to:

  • The ongoing research on artistic methods in architecture.
  • Building collaborative networks and investigating opportunities for implementing projects.
  • The departments teaching activities together with the rest of the staff , like contribute to teaching in:
    – Observational drawing/sketching, illustration, drawing as installation, composition with two and three-dimensional form, Drawing methods for learning and improvisation.
    – Practical exercises in: applied color theory, three dimensional form composition, patternmaking and sculptural expression of color, NCS and architectural color, color in architectural visualization
    – Focusing on architectural design and the role of the architect in a world of radical change, the interface of art and architecture and non-linear design processes.
  • Supervision of Master thesis and advising in the PhD programmes
  • Generating new externally financed projects.
  • Administrative work as part of the general tasks within teaching, research and development of the department.

The work duties can change over time.

Required qualifications

The position of Associate Professor within the interface between architecture and artistic practice requires that you meet the criteria in the Regulations concerning appointment and promotion to teaching and research posts section 1-4.

  • Your PhD, or equivalent merit in artistic or architectural work, must be relevant for the post, which is within the interface between architecture and artistic practice.  If you can document that you are in the final phase of your PhD education, application may be assessed.
  • Artistic activities or development work at a high international level and with a specialization relevant for the interface architecture and artistic practice, may replace the requirement of a PhD.
  • Good written and oral English language skills

You must document relevant basic competence in teaching and supervision at a university/higher education-level, as referenced in the Norwegian national Regulations. If this cannot be documented, you will be required to complete an approved course in university pedagogy within two years of commencement. NTNU offers qualifying courses.

New employees who do not speak a Scandinavian language by appointment is required, within three years, to demonstrate skills in Norwegian or another Scandinavian language equivalent to level three of the course for Norwegian for speakers of other languages at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU.

Preferred qualifications

Applicants with following documented experience will be preferred:

  • Teaching experience from higher education
  • Track record in generating externally funded projects
  • Participation in international networks
  • Architectural and artistic activity on an international level
  • Experience in initiating, running, and completing projects.
  • Good written and oral Scandinavian language skills

We offer

Salary and conditions

In a position as Associate Professor (code 1011) you will normally be remunerated from gross NOK 597 000 – NOK 768 500 per year, depending on qualifications and seniority. As required by law, 2% of this salary will be deducted and paid into the Norwegian Public Service Pension Fund.

Employment will be granted in accordance with the principles outlined in the regulations in force concerning State Employees and Civil Servants, and the acts relating to Control of the Export of Strategic Goods, Services and Technology. Candidates who by assessment of the application and attachment are seen to conflict with the criteria in the latter law will be prohibited from recruitment to NTNU. Applicants should be aware that there may be changes in the working environment after employment has commenced.

It is a prerequisite that you are able to be present and accessible at the institution daily.

Joint work will also be considered. If it is difficult to identify your specific input to a joint project, you must include evidence of your contributions.

Our assessment will be based on documented pedagogical material, forms of presentation in your academic works, teaching experience, PhD, and Masters supervision, and any other relevant pedagogical background. Both quality and scope will be taken into consideration.

This means that we will pay particular attention to the quality and academic range demonstrated by your scientific work to date.
